Rehabilitation
Therapy
The goal of the Physical Therapy staff is to help each client
achieve their full potential. This is accomplished by performing
an evaluation, and developing goals and a treatment plan that are
specific to each individual client. The emphasis is most often
on restoring movement and function, and a wide variety of problems
can be addressed. It has been said that the practice of Physical
Therapy is as old as pain itself; and the treatment of pain is
often a component of Physical Therapy treatments. The Physical
Therapy staff has a wide range of treatment options available. Almost
every treatment plan includes some type of exercise, and clients
are given information to promote continued well-being when they
are no longer being seen for Physical Therapy. People of all ages
are treated by Physical Therapy. Physical Therapy is performed
in a variety of settings including hospital inpatient, skilled
nursing (ECF) unit, outpatient department, and in the patient's
home. Sometimes an assessment of a client's work setting is advisable
to determine if something there is contributing to the problems
a client is experiencing.
Our hours of operation are 7:00am - 6:00pm Monday through Friday,
with variable hours on Saturday. Call 647-5240, ext. 2285, to
arrange an appointment.
Occupational Therapy
This form of therapy helps people to perform normal daily functions
safely and as independently as possible. This may include self
care activities such as bathing and dressing, preparing meals or
performing work activities. Occupational therapists can teach
clients how to use special equipment that makes it easier to perform
some of those tasks. Training in energy conservation may be a
part of the treatment. They are also skilled in making splints
and making recommendations for wheelchairs. Sometimes a home assessment
is performed to give suggestions to improve safety and ease of
performance for daily living activities. In addition, Occupational
Therapy Staff treat problems of the shoulder, arm, and hand. Treatment
begins with an evaluation, development of individualized goals,
and a treatment plan. Occupational Therapy is available for selected
inpatients, skilled nursing (ECF) residents, and outpatients.
Hours of operation are 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday through Friday,
with variable hours on Saturday. For an appointment, call 647-5240,
ext. 2285.
Speech Therapy
The Speech Pathology department works with clients with a variety
of communication and swallowing problems. There are different
types of communication disorders. The client may have difficulty
understanding what is said or be unable to find the words they
want to say. Problems can be related to weakness that does not
allow the person to make the proper sounds. Sometimes memory skills
are interfering with communication.
There are a number of reasons that a person may experience swallowing
difficulty. Speech therapists perform two types of swallow evaluations. Both
require a detailed history from the patient or family member. Different
consistencies of food and liquid are given to the patients to determine
the quality of swallowing function. An x-ray procedure called
a barium cookie swallow may be recommended after the initial swallowing
evaluation. This allows the speech pathologist, along with a radiologist,
to observe food or liquid as it is swallowed and travels to the
client's stomach. Clients of all ages are served, from infants
with feeding problems to geriatric age. Services are available
for inpatients, skilled nursing (ECF) residents, outpatients, and
Home Health clients.
Appointments can be made by calling 647-5240, ext. 2285.
