Cardiac Rehabilitation / Graham Wellness Center

What is the best type of exercise equipment to own?

The best type of equipment to have is the one you really like and will use. Too often, home exercise equipment becomes an object to hang clothing on, or sits unattended in the basement. If you find equipment that you consistently use in a health center and have it placed in a location that is comfortable and easy to access, you are much more likely to use it.

I’ve been here two weeks now and I haven’t lost any weight. I thought that all of this exercise would make me lose weight.

You must burn 3000 calories to melt off 1 lb of weight. People average burning about 240 calories with their hour of exercise, so if you are serious about losing weight, you must address your dietary habits as well as exercise. Portion size is usually the biggest offender of the waistline. With time, exercise will increase muscle density, and thereby increase your metabolism and improve how you look, but these are subtle changes over time.

I haven’t had any chest pain, but I have had this awful indigestion. Could this be my heart?

Any discomfort above the waist could be a cardiac symptom. Symptoms of chest fullness, pressure, indigestion, especially if not responsive to antacids, may be an indication of angina or heart attack. Discomfort can be in the high stomach area, the arms, jaws or back as well as the chest. Early diagnosis and treatment can save your life.

I’m having surgery at Graham Hospital. Can I donate blood for my surgery, or can I have friends/relatives donate blood for me?
Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center performs autologous (donating for yourself) and directed donations. My physician has instructed me to fast for my laboratory blood work. How long should I fast?
Most laboratory tests which require fasting require a fast of at least 8 to 10 hours prior to drawing of the tests.

Which laboratory tests require a fasting specimen?
FBS (Fasting Blood Sugar), Lipid Profile (which includes a cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL), Thyroid Profile (fasting is preferred) and Comprehensive (which may include a fasting blood sugar).

What are the hours that the Laboratory is open to the public?
Currently the Laboratory is open to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, the optimum time to visit the Laboratory is Monday through Friday, 7am to 7pm. Weekend staffing is limited in the areas of the Laboratory and Patient Registration. However, if a patient is unable to be accommodated Monday through Friday, he/she may come to the Laboratory on the weekends as well.

Are there any tests that must be scheduled in advance of my arrival to the laboratory?
Tests that must be scheduled in advance through the Patient Registration department include: Stress Testing, EEG Monitoring, 24 hour Monitor Application, 30 day Event Monitor Application, Therapeutic Phlebotomy, Glucose Tolerance Test, Drug Screen Testing, and FAA EKG (Aviation EKG, specifically ordered by Dr. Gibbs).

I have to obtain a stool collection for a variety of laboratory tests. Are there any special requirements for collection of a stool specimen?
The area physicians have been instructed on collection processes. However, in the event that you have not been instructed on the collection of a stool specimen, please call the Laboratory, specifically Microbiology, at 309-647-5240, ext. 2246.

My physician has instructed me to collect a urine specimen for urinalysis. Are there any special requirements for collection of a urine specimen.
A clean-catch first morning urine specimen is the best specimen for testing. Special storage requirements are necessary as well. If you have questions, please call the Laboratory prior to collection of any urine specimen at 309-647-5240, ext. 2245.

I have had a mastectomy. Are there any special requirements as to where blood may be drawn from me?
Usually your physician will instruct you to inform any health care personnel who need to perform venipuncture, or any invasive needle stick on you, to not draw from the same arm in close proximity to the mastectomy site. The patient must be assertive in informing the health care worker of the instructions.

My physician has ordered a laboratory test on me. Do I come directly to the Laboratory upon arrival at the hospital?
No, you must first register in Patient Registration prior to coming to the Laboratory. Your physician will either call or fax your orders to Patient Registration, or give you a written script with orders for your laboratory tests that you will give to Patient Registration upon your arrival.

How much time should I allow for registration and performance of my laboratory tests?
Please allow at least 30 minutes for routine ordering and collection. Certain circumstances may increase this time. Other scheduled tests that are not routine may take even longer. Please call ahead at 309-647-5240, ext. 2245, if you wish to inquire further.

I am having a Protime performed and a Theophylline Level measured. Should I go ahead and take Coumadin and the Theophylline prior to coming to the Laboratory for testing?
The draw times for various drugs levels may be affected by when an actual dosage is administered. Please call in advance of coming to the Laboratory to ensure that your laboratory tests are being accurately tested with respect to draw times.

Physical Therapy

Where should I park when I come to the hospital for Physical, Occupational or Speech Therapy?

Patient parking is available in the nearest section of the main hospital parking lot, with the first several rows designated for handicapped parking.

Graham Hospital is pleased to offer Assisted Patient Parking for patients, families and visitors who need assistance. Patients and visitors are encouraged to utilize the front entrance of the hospital, where a parking attendant will greet and assist those in need.

What should I wear when I attend Physical Therapy sessions?

It is a good idea to dress comfortably in clothing in which you can move freely but will also allow the therapist to access the part of your body that is being treated.

Do I need a doctor's order for Physical, Occupational, or Speech Therapy?

Yes, referral to all three of these services is on the order of a physician. Dentists or chiropractors can make referrals also. Your prescription can be used at the facility of your choice. Just because your doctor may be in another city or town, does not mean that you must have your therapy at his office.

Physical and Occupational Therapy sound similar. How do I know which one would be better for me?

There are some similarities between the two, and the same person might have both Physical and Occupational Therapy (eg: someone who has had a stroke). Generally speaking, Physical Therapy focuses more on problems in the larger muscle groups of the body, for what is referred to as gross motor activities. This includes walking, changing positions, balance, posture, etc. The emphasis of Occupational Therapy is on smaller muscle groups for fine motor activities. This includes using the hands and activities of daily living, such as bathing and dressing. Physical Therapy is more commonly prescribed when pain is the primary complaint. Your health care provider or our Physical/Occupational Therapy staff can help you determine which would be of more benefit.

Where do I go after I am done with my appointment?
